Saratoga Historical Bridge Retrofit Project

Project Description & Scope

The Saratoga Historical Bridge retrofit project, located in Saratoga, CA, addresses seismic and structural concerns while preserving the functionally obsolete historic bridge. Mozamo played a crucial role in this project, providing expertise in construction management and coordination. The project aims to maintain safe and stable connectivity along State Route 9 between the City of Saratoga in Santa Clara County and the community of Felton in Santa Cruz County. Caltrans identified the need for bridge replacement or retrofitting due to seismic and structural concerns.

The project involved the installation of an Acrow temporary modular bridge to maintain traffic flow on Highway 9 during the retrofitting of the historical stone arch bridge. To enhance the bridge’s structural integrity, the soil over the arches was excavated, and steel girders were meticulously installed within the stone masonry walls. A new precast concrete bridge deck was then placed atop the steel girders. The bridge’s stability was further ensured through reinforced concrete abutments supported by 24” and 36” CIDH piles. By combining technical expertise, meticulous coordination, and adherence to safety protocols, Mozamo Engineering successfully contributed to the Saratoga Historical Bridge retrofit. The project ensures the bridge’s compliance with seismic safety regulations, enhancing connectivity and preserving the historical significance of the area.
