Scofield Avenue Undercrossing Project

Project Description & Scope

This CMGC Scofield Avenue Undercrossing Seismic Retrofit project was located on Route 580, in Richmond, CA. The scope of the project was to complete the seismic retrofit of the Scofield Avenue Undercrossing by performing work on the foundations, columns, bearings, and steel superstructure while leaving the recently replaced deck intact. This $15.3 million project consisted of bearing replacements using PTFE spherical bearings and isolation bearings, steel column retrofits, demolition and reconstruction of concrete pedestals, structural steel work in the superstructure, construction of a retaining wall, installation of drainage systems, and miscellaneous other work.  Mozamo provided materials engineering and inspection services during construction. We supported the Caltrans Structures Representative and Caltrans Resident Engineer on this project by overseeing all off-site structural fabrication. We led a team of certified welding inspectors (CWIs) and ASNT NDT technicians to perform quality assurance inspections of structural steel, including the PTFE spherical bearings and column casings. Mozamo staff also led the instrumentation and monitoring of the load transfer to the new retrofit system. The field instrumentation operation provided critical information to the construction team and the design team for this CMGC project. All of our staff went through extensive background checks, training and complied with all security measures implemented on the project.
